What is the Christian Worldview? A Review

Every time I use the word Weltanschauung my wife starts singing the word to the tune of Danke Schön. Maybe she’s trying to get me to be less pretentious.

Philip Graham Ryken explains worldview in a non-pretenious fashion in his booklet What is the Christian Worldview? part of the Basics of the Reformed Faith Series. Ryken explains first, what a worldview is ‘the structure of understanding that we use to make sense of our world.’ (p. 7) It is the sum of our presuppositions.

Ryken introduces the Christian Worldview with a series of essential presuppositions. The first is that God reveals himself. Not only has he revealed himself in nature but has given us clearer revelation in the Scriptures. God has revealed as the triune God and this Trinity is fundamental to the rest of revelation.

Ryken also explains the framework of Biblical history and worldview under the headings of creation, the fall, grace, and glory. He deftly explains the framework and the impact of the Christian worldview on how we live. Theology is not solely cerebral but immensely practical. Therefore, I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the Christian worldview.

      Augustine on God 'before' creation.

This is my reply to anyone who asks: ‘What was God doing before he made the heaven and the earth?’ My reply is not that which someone is said to have give as a joke to evade the force of the question. He said: ‘He was preparing hells for people who inquire into profundities.’ It is one thing to laugh, another to see the point at issue, and this reply I reject. I would have preferred to answer ‘I am ignorant of what I do not know’ rather than reply so as to ridicule someone who has asked a deep question and to win approval for an answer which is a mistake.

      Confessions XI.xvi.21

And all this time Augustine was quoted incorrectly to me…

      Bavinck on Creation

My (2.5 year-old) son let me read him a page on creation from Herman Bavinck’s Reformed Dogmatics. I found this paragraph particularly useful:

This teaching of creation, which occupies a preeminent and pivotal place in Scripture, is not, however, presented as a philosophical explanation of the problem of existence. Most certainly it also offers an answer to the question of the origin of all things. Yet its significance is first and foremost religious and ethical. No right relation to God is conceivable apart from this basis; it positions us in the proper relation to God. It is therefore of eminent practical value, serving to bring out the greatness, the omnipotence, the majesty, and the goodness, wisdom and love of God. The teaching of creation therefore strengthens people’s faith, confirms their trust in God, and is a source of consolation in their suffering; it inspires praise and thanksgiving; it induces humility and meekness and makes people sense their smallness and insignificance before God.
       Reformed Dogmatics 2.8.250

I especially enjoy how Bavinck applies doctrine and that it is not an egg-headed exercise but that God revealed this doctrine for the whole man, head and heart.
